The legal side of a wedding can feel heavy. I find that couples often worry about forgetting something, saying the wrong thing or not understanding what is required. And my reply is always the same: it can feel complicated, but in reality, I promise it’s simple!
What is legally required
In Ireland, there are only a few elements that must happen in a legal wedding ceremony:
- You both declare that you are free to marry each other
- You speak your vows using the legal wording (I always recommend the couples I work with to repeat these after me)
- An authorised solemniser is present (I can help with that!)
- Two witnesses over the age of 18 sign the paperwork
Everything else is your choice.
What you can shape
Once you have the legal elements in place, you can focus on what makes the ceremony yours.
You can decide:
- Whether to include readings or poems
- What music feels right
- Symbolic gestures that have meaning for you
- The length of the ceremony
- The tone of the ceremony
This makes it much easier to make choices with confidence. On my side of the house, I provide samples to my couples if they are struggling to find a starting point.
Where couples get stuck
Stress often comes from mixing legal and personal elements. Many of the couples I have chatted with worry about saying something wrong or not following tradition. The truth is that as long as the legal elements are in place, everything else is flexible. You can focus on creating a ceremony that feels right for you.
